Teacher to help in Dominican
By Marc Zienkiewicz A Lac du Bonnet Senior School teacher will travel to the Dominican Republic later this month to help poverty-stricken school kids. Ashley Brunette leaves March 25 for the Caribbean island, where she?ll carry out humanitarian work with aid organization Power Trips, which carries out what it calls ?extreme school makeovers? in developing countries. ?I?m really looking forward to it,? she said on Wednesday. ?The people I?ve met abroad have such an amazing spirit.? It?s not the first time the 31-yearold Brunette has travelled abroad to help disadvantaged youth. In 1999 she went to Honduras six months after Hurricane Mitch attacked the country, and later went to Brazil where she spent time doing work in the Amazon jungle. ?That first trip to Honduras when I was 20 made me realize there?s so many people in need in the world,? she said. Power Trips works to not only do general project work in schools, but also to work with the children that attend them. Th e organization organizes day camps, sports activities, literacy programs, and a lot more. Project work includes fi xing broken desks, creating safe play areas, and constructing new classrooms. Brunette said the education system in developing countries is a far cry Serving: Lac du Bonnet, Pine Falls, Beausejour, Anola, Oak Bank, Garson & Tyndall and surrounding Areas.
? No travel charges.

Booze prices rise
By Marc Zienkiewicz Beer prices in Manitoba rose $1.25 per 12-pack bottles as of as of Monday, affecting bar owners and customers alike. ?What can you do? Th at?s the damn government for you,? Lac du Bonnet?s Denys Fraser said. Fraser manages the Lakeview Hotel. He said in addition to having to charge more for beer at the hotel?s vendor, his prices have gone up 10 cents a bottle at the bar, drawing the usual comments from customers after they notice prices have gone up. In a statement released last Friday, the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission (MLCC) says the hike is a result of a recent supplier price increase, an increase in the MLCC?s markup and an increase in the fee paid to beer vendors for handling empty containers.
