Derby enjoys sunny skies
By Marc Zienkiewicz Th e Lac du Bonnet Ice Fishing Derby was once again a splendid success this year, as anyone who attended last Saturday?s event will attest. Participants enjoyed sunny skies and balmy temperatures, not to mention a shot at the grand prize, which was won by Winnipeg?s Jamie Gillis. Gillis? 34 cm sauger ended up being the winning fish, which is determined through a randomlygenerated hidden length and time. ?It?s my first fish ever at a derby,? Gillis said, accepting his $10,000 cheque. ?It still hasn?t sunk in.? Gillis said he?ll use the cash to spruce up his boat with a GPS and fi sh fi nder. There were some disappointments as well. Lac du Bonnet?s Don Hebert caught a northern pike just seconds after the derby ended, taking him out of the running for the cash prizes. ?Unbelievable,? Hebert said, shaking his head. ?Oh well, that?s life. What can you do?? Despite 1,063 people participating (down slightly from 1,124 last year), only 80 fi sh were caught ? meaning only seven per cent of anglers were lucky enough to catch a fi sh. Winning the other top four prizes were Gary Francis ($2,500), John Labaty (fishing trip for two to Eagle Nest Lodge), Kevin Elsley ($1,000) and Jeanna Ward ($750). All were from Winnipeg with the exception of Ward, who hails from Selkirk. A new prize included this year was an ATV raffle, won by Chris Stefaniuk from Beausejour. Winning the Lions Club draw for a $1,000 bill was Th orsten Helbig of Stonewall. It was the fourth year for the derby, which was started by the Lac du Bonnet Chamber of Commerce. Th e derby is now a standalone event separate from the chamber. Serving: Lac du Bonnet, Pine Falls, Beausejour, Anola, Oak Bank, Garson & Tyndall and surrounding Areas.
