Merger dead until 2018
PHOTO BY BRIAN CHOPTAIN According to Lac du Bonnet Reeve Gus Wruck, the process of amalgamation of the town and RM before the 2014 elections is officially over. BY BRIAN CHOPTAIN firstname.lastname@example.org "No" was the answer to the nonbinding motion to list the Town of Lac du Bonnet as its partner in the amalgamation process at the RM of Lac du Bonnet council meeting on March 26. e two-for, two-against vote meant that the RM will not be signing a form by the end of March 31 to declare to the province that they are interesting in exploring the amalgamation process with the town of Lac du Bonnet. When asked about the defeat of the motion, Reeve Gus Wruck replied in a e-mail to the leader that the process is effectively "dead." The purpose of the motion was that paperwork would be filed and sent to the province so that they could send out consultants to advise the councils on how to move ahead in their investigation of amalgamation. "As a result, the amalgama- tion process is basically dead until the next election cycle in 2018, unless Manitoba Local Government makes some special exemption," said Wruck. Were both town and RM wanting to amalgamate, the deadline to make the changes for the 2014 municipal elections is by Dec. 31, 2013 according to the province. "I doubt if there will be further investigation as there is no justification or authority to proceed in this direction at this time," said Wruck. RM councillor Doug Marks said he doesn't feel there's enough info at present to rush into amalgamating. "I want to get more information rst, there is a bit of a push to getting it done," said Marks, referring to the provincial deadline of Dec. 2013 for municipalities under 1,000. "We need to do our due diligence, I am not saying no to amalgamation, we just need to do our homework."
